The Owners

BBcollectiveownIn 2015, owners Sandra Geronimo and Sarah Reed moved from Ohio to open this artisan collective. While visiting family in Winterset, they fell in love with the area and especially the old jail. The culture of hospitality they found in the people they met, and the history of the jail, attracted them to settle here. They look forward to extending the warmth that defines Winterset.

The Location

The Madison County Jail was built in 1903, with the stone addition made in 1934. A radio tower was built in 1956. The jail served the community through most of the twentieth century. Prison graffiti dating to 1989 continues to chronicle the terms of those incarcerated there. Jail cells, bars, doors, floors and walls have been preserved as they were when active. After the jail closed, it became a single family residence and retail space. The original features and fixtures add to the unique style of what has most recently become 1st Avenue Collective, an artisan market that promotes local artists and artisans.
